Editor's Note: I included this article written by Jane Winslow about finding back issues of magazines because you may need to access back issues when you do your freelance research.
We normally face two problems when it comes to back issues of magazines. Either we have way too many of them or we can’t find the ones we want. These publications serve many purposes for many people but they can pile up at a moment’s notice. They also can be quite elusive if you are looking for specific back issues of magazines.
After finding out that I was going to have a baby I signed up for nearly every print publication available that related to the birth. I signed up for subscriptions to everything that had the word “baby” or “parent” in the title. By the time my little one arrived I found myself sinking in back issues of magazines.
The only thing I could think to do with the unwanted publications was to recycle them. I rounded the back issues of magazines up and sent them off to our local recycling deposit site. I didn’t realize that I would want to get one of the publications back after awhile. Finding back issues of magazines as I was going to discover can be a real pain in the neck.
Years ago, you would have to go to the library to find back issues of magazines but there are so many on the market today that my local library can’t keep up with the publications. I wanted one particular magazine that was released about three years ago. This was not one of the back issues of magazines made specifically with babies in mind.
I was looking for the January issue of Elle magazine because I was putting together a baby time capsule for my daughter who shares the name of that famous publication. What better item to put in a time capsule than a publication released in her birth month that also bears her name? I started looking for back issues of magazines to pinpoint this particular publication of Elle.
Since my trip to the local library sent me home empty-handed, I decided to consult my second most reliable source. My computer has been the single most used source of information when it comes to everything from trivia to finding back issues of magazines.
I was thrilled to find a site that offered these elusive items and it
is organized in alphabetical order. In no time at all, I had the precious
back issue magazine that was released in the month of Elle’s birth.
