How to obtain a CIP Listing and LCCN Number

The Cataloging In Publication, CIP, data and the Library of Congress Card Number, LCCN, should appear on the title page of your publication. It is important if you plan to market your book to libraries. While it's not intended to be a marketing tool, it can help your sales.

Why You Need a Catalog Listing and an LCCN Number

The purpose of a Catalog Listing is to provide librarians with all the information they need, in an agreed-upon format and vocabulary, prior to the time that full cataloging is available.
Without this data, libraries could mistakenly misshelve a book. In some cases libraries will not order material without an LCCN.

Self publishers are NOT allowed to request a Catalog Listing

The Library of Congress prevents self publishers and ebook publishers from requesting a listing. To get around this exclusion it is necessary to go through a Distributor that supplies libraries. They can file the catalog with the Library of Congress on your behalf.
