Go Treasure Hunting For Freelance Writing Opportunities

Freelance Writing Opportunities

Online job auction sites have created an explosion in the number of freelance writing opportunities available today. Okay, that’s only partially true. More opportunities have been created, but existing opportunities have also become less fragmented and more accessible.

Writing Jobs Used to Be Local

There was a time when writing jobs were locale-specific. Finding non- fiction work—journalism or advertising jobs, for example—meant looking for notices in a given city, from many different sources.

Meanwhile, fiction opportunities showed themselves in the latest issue of Writer’s Digest and other writers’ magazines. And publishing your novel meant tracking down that year’s edition of the Writer’s Market at your local library.

This situation discouraged a few writers from trying. It also discouraged many potential employers from trying as well. After all, was it worth the expense of a magazine or newspaper ad to get help on that small writing project? Businesses that couldn’t afford the expense of a full-time technical writer often went without.

eBay Changed How Services Are Sold

Take a good look at eBay. The site itself is wonderful for its intended purpose, but it’s the site’s impact I want you to focus on. eBay sellers—at low cost and little hassle—display their products to the buyers who really want them, regardless of location.

Painstakingly looking at the classifieds is no longer the best option in treasure hunting. This is also true for freelance writing opportunities.

Online Job Auction Sites

Online job auction sites allow anyone to seek freelance help from anywhere in the world. Many of these sites are specialty-specific. For example, Information Technology is the focus of Rent-A-Coder.com. Check them out anyway. A closer inspection reveals a number freelance writing opportunities. Otherwise, expect dog-eat-dog competition at writer- specific sites such as CreativeMoonlighter.com

Freelance Showcase Sites

Another type of site useful to the freelance writer is the “showcase” site. Places like RoseDog.com let editors and agents see your work without the tedium of making multiple submissions. If someone wants to see more, they’ll contact you.

Find Your Opportunity

It makes sense that more freelance writing opportunities are available via the Internet. After all, the World Wide Web has to be the single largest written work on the planet. Use it to find your opportunity and keep writing.
