Print On Demand... The Easy Way To Get Published!

Print on Demand

Print on Demand or POD is changing the way we publish. You should be aware of the recent changes in printing technology. IBM, Xerox and Canon have been blurring the line between paper printing and book production services.

They have developed printing machines that look like large photocopiers, but have the ability to create a finished bound book with a color cover in a matter of minutes.

Get Published Fast

POD Publishers will take your written manuscript and produced a finished book. Within 3 months they will proofread, typeset, design and print your work. All this for a small setup fee. (No query letter required!)

Why do they do it?

Most of their profits come from the later sales of your book. Some companies provide a free marketing package or an online bookstore listing to further increase sales.

What the Print On Demand Publisher
Forgot to Tell You...

The following services are usually not included in the Print On Demand Publisher packages:

  • Editing. Publishers offer limited editing services. Use editing services to improve sales and make your book readable.
  • Copyright. It is very important to understand how to protect your work from thieves. Understand little known secrets about Copyrights.
  • Marketing. The success of your book is mainly the result of your marketing efforts. Learn how to market and promote your book into a sales winner.

PROS

1. Royalties are higher. Royalties are 15%-30% of net. Royalties are the lifeblood of every author. The more money you keep in your pocket at the end of day, the better.
Since copies are only produced when ordered, you'll never run out. Traditional publishers must first cost justify doing a second printing after all books are sold from the first run.

3. Low Investment for the Writer. Print on Demand prices ranges between $500-$800 in setup services to get the book ready for print.

4. Speed to Market. Most Print On Demand Publishers can produce your book within 3-4 months.

5. Quality of the finished product is good. Most books created by POD's are almost identical in quality to books in your neighborhood bookstore. Your customers will never know the difference.

6. Your book is available online. Bookstores can order through distribution for your book and your book will also show up on Amazon.com.

7. Print On Demand Contracts are usually flexible. For most POD's you have the ability to sign with a traditional publisher at a later date.

CONS

1. You have to purchase copies of your own book. If you are promoting your book and want to send copies to a reviewer, you must purchase copies. Print On Demand publishers provide few free copies. They do provide a discount when you purchase.

2. Bookstores don't usually stock POD books. Why? Because POD publishers usually do N-O-T accept returns from retailers. Retailers frequently return books that aren't selling at no cost to them. A potential customer for your book can special order your book from a retailer but it will not appear on a retailer's shelf.

3. Marketing is up to you. Don't expect extensive marketing assistance from the POD's. The success of your book is dependant on your marketing efforts. Usually, Non-fiction books are better suited to POD. If you are shy and you can't see yourself doing book signings or actively talking about your work, then seek another type of publisher.
