Why do people enter writing contests? Contests can be fun and challenging! The prize money can be the goal, or for some it is a good way to improve their writing resume.

Here are some tips to entering a contest. These are some things you should consider before entering.

Entry Fees. Entry fees can range from free to $50. Most are between $5 and $15. A contest does not need to be free to be legitimate. Many reputable companies use entry fees to cover expenses and fund the prize money.

Contest Rules. Ensure the rules are clearly stated. Does it have deadlines, format, fees, prizes, judging information? If you can't find clear rules don't enter.

Read Rules Carefully. Some contests require entrants to give up copyright rights even if they don't win the contest. This means you may give the company permission to publish your work. Preventing you from selling or publishing your work ever again. Just beware of what rights you are giving up. For you it may be acceptable to have your work made available on the web. It's up to you.

Poetry Contests are often scams. Some contests are only covers for Vanity publishing companies. Usually all entrants win and are pressured into purchasing expensive books containing all the winners.
