Find a Book Publishing Company for Your Manuscript

Book Publishing

The task of finding a publisher can seem daunting. You probably wonder, "Will I ever get my book published?

The first time I attempted to get a manuscript published, I was scared and intimidated by publishers. I had no idea where to begin. I found a publisher and mailed off my manuscript and waited... and waited... I never did hear back from the publisher. I was so sure they would love the book. That's when I got smart and started reading about the proper way to approach publishers.

Your search will eventually be successful by following these tips:

  • Check Bookstores. Check bookstores and libraries for books that interest you. Contact these publishers first by searching their website for submission requirements.
  • Read Lots of Books. By reading lots of books and magazines you can compare the quality of your work. Is your work of similar writing quality? Does it flow like books you read? If it doesn't polish your work. Rework you writings. Seek help by using professional editing or take writing courses.

  • Review Guidelines Carefully (see my publishers list). In a conversation with one publishing company, they frequently receive submissions that do not follow their posted guidelines. For example, some guidelines clearly state no queries by non-agents. Don't bother to send a query without an agent-- it will end up in the trash!
  • Get a Literary Agent. You may not be cut out for all the sales skills required to sell your work to a publisher. If your work is of good quality, hiring a literary agent may be your best bet.
  • Keep Accurate Records. Keep track of all of your submissions. Know where each query letter is going. Investigate writing software that tracks your submissions. By staying organized you will know when it is time to follow up and ensure you are pursuing all opportunities.
  • Learn From Rejection. It is normal and expected to receive many rejection letters from the book publishing query letters you submit. Every author receives rejection. Use rejection letter suggestions to modify and improve your work for the next submission.
  • Don't Give Up. Most editors are warm hearted and love the work they do. They need writers to survive. Make their job easier by making your work the best it can be. There are many, many markets for your work. Be persistent. Keep your energy and motivation high by joining Writing Groups, Associations and Online Forums.
